I’m not sure how often I’ll have this much time so I better take advantage of it…
Gulu is great – I really like it here, even if it isn’t as remote as I’d prefer. The drive to Gulu from Kampala was long and fairly rough but nice. It started a few hours late because the van was overheating and we had to find a part. On the drive we (the driver and I) crossed the Nile River – which starts from Lake Victoria, saw some baboons and monkeys, and picked up some fruit from vendors along the way.
Today we went to the main market to get some fruit and vegetables. I think in a future trip I’ll have to get some of the flip-flops stamped out of old tires that I saw. If anyone else wants a pair, let me know – I’m sure they are only a few thousand shillings (sounds funny, huh?). I think the most notable purchase today was avocados the size of mangoes.
I have a house to myself for a while and it’s actually fairly nice – meaning tile floors and running water. The electricity usually works. Gulu has a lot of shops and vendors and you can get pretty much anything here. The streets are dirt, full of potholes, and chaotic – and when it rains, it all turns to red mud. The vast majority of people live in huts here.
Hmm, that’s all for now I guess. Next week we hold a family therapy training for local counselors and then start our intervention. I suppose then I won’t have as much time to do things like make bug nets out of plastic bottles and trash bags – oh well.
So exciting to read all this, Chris. Sounds like you'll be meeting Jesus on a daily basis.
